ACCORDING to data from http://www.royal.pingdom.com site, currently estimated there are around 1.3 billion users of electronic mail, or more popularly called by email around the world. The users also vary from school children, students, professors, housekeepers, housewives, vegetable huckster in the market, businessmen, ministers to the president.

Among many users, probably still do not know much since when email is used and who the first person who created it. The following will be presented early history of the creation of email.
It started in 1968 at a company called Olt Break and Newman (BBN). The company was contracted by the U.S. Defense Department to create something called the ARPANET, which later evolved into the Internet. ARPANET stands for Advanced Research Projects Agency Network, and aims to create a method of communication between the military and educational institutions to each other.

In 1971, an engineer named Ray Tomlinson was assigned to the project called SNDMSG. This program is not a new program, because in fact the program has been around for many years. By today’s standards, the program could be said more than primitive. What do these programs only allow users on the same machine are able to send messages to each other. Users can create text documents will then be sent to the mailbox on the same machine.

Ray initially experimented with a program called SNDMSG that can be used to leave a message on a computer, so that others who use the computer can read the message left. Then he continued his experiments by using the protocol file named CYPNET so the program can last SNDMSG send messages to other computers in the network ARPAnet. That was the beginning of the creation of an ‘e-mail’. E-mail messages are first sent Ray, and e-mail is the first in the world is “QWERTYUIOP”.

In 1972, Ray introduced the icon ‘@’ as an e-mail identities to separate user id and domain an e-mail address, which means “at” or “on”.

One of the first email programs that can be used most by the public is Eudora. Email was first written in 1988 by Steve Dorner. At that time he was an employee at the University of Illinois.

Eudora is taken from the name of the late Eudora Welty, a writer from America. Eudora is the first email client which provides a graphical interface. At first this email appears to be free, though later after purchased by Qualcomm in 1994, Eudora became a professional product.

Like others in the web application, Eudora is the king for several years, and then quickly replaced by the email client of the Netscape and Internet Explorer. Both the email client to be popular not only because they are better than Eudora, but also because they are provided free of charge with a web browser.

Components Email

An email address consists of two parts, namely the left of the sign @ is the user id, which indicates the identity of the owner of the e-mail. User id can be the owner’s name, initials, nicknames, numbers, or whatever. While the text after the symbol @ (example: ymail.com) called the domain name / hostname, which shows the domain identity of the e-mail (mail server) is stored.

Type Email

There are 3 types of e-mail services, namely: POP mail, E-mail Forwarding E-mail and web-based, each has advantages and disadvantages.

a. Pop Mail
E-mail is the same type of email that you received from your ISP

It features:
• Ability to read it offline (no need to connect to the Internet) to check email, you need to connect to your POP mail server, then download all your existing email, then you can disconnect from the Internet and reading email.

Cons:
• You can not check your emails anywhere

b. Web Based Mail
Email this type is offered by email of site / web

It features:
• You can check your email from anywhere

Cons:
• To check your email to selalau connected to the internet.

c. Email Forwarding It features:
• You can hide the real email address, but it does not need to tell your new email.

Shipping Method

To send an email we need a mail-client programs. The email we send will go through several points before reaching the destination

Accessing Email

Email was originally stored in a mailserver. Usually when someone using an ISP connection to connect to the internet, he will be given a free email. Emails received will be stored on ISP mail server.

Using the ‘browser’, such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. This method is called as a web-based, meaning we use the web media as an intermediary to the email box. Examples: Yahoo! Mail and Gmail. To use it, users must be in a state online. Web-based email services are usually provided by free email providers.

The access program using e-mail (e-mail client), such as Eudora Mail, Outlook Express, Mozilla Thunderbird, Mutt. By using a program like this, one must know the configuration can be obtained from the ISP. The advantage is that it can read email without the need to connect continuously with the Internet and tens and even hundreds of emails can be received and shipped together at once. Another advantage of this software provides editing functions and reading emails offline. Thus the cost of connection to the Internet can be saved.

Ethical use of email

Ethics in the same email with the ethics of ordinary writing. There is an email whose content is an informal formal. Some important points:

Do not send email with attachment (attachment) that is too large (more than 1 mb). Not everyone has fast Internet access, and there is the possibility of exceeding the capacity of the attachment the email recipient’s mail server so that the recipient will be rejected. In addition, note also that some email providers also apply restrictions on the number, type, and size of emails that can be received (and sent) users.

Do not send information (forward) emails without thinking usefulness for the intended person.

Always fill in the subject, do not be left blank.

Do not use capital letters because it could create the impression you are shouting.

And of course, use words with santunSmile. Sometimes we write something different will be impressed with what we really mean.

Security

Data security in e-mail is not guaranteed and there is always a risk open to the public, in the sense that all contents can be read by others. This is caused by the email that will pass through many servers before reaching the destination. Not closed the possibility of someone intercepting the email sent.

Email can be secured by performing randomization techniques (encryption). One of the most popular encryption programs is PGP (Pretty Good Privacy). By using the content of PGP will dienkrip, and the only person who can decrypt directed and read the email. The disadvantage is that makes trouble sending and receiving party (as they must have a PGP program, and the sender must have the recipient’s public key, and encrypts the message with the key).

Development Email

Began in the 1980s email was enjoyed by the general public, whether free email or paid. Today many web-based email provided freely by Telkom, Yahoo!, Google, MSN, etc.. Capacity was varied from 100 mb to the infinite.

Now email can added a signature, that mean you can add your id can be image or text, placed on bottom of email message for promoted your website, product or some thing else
you can create your own signature maker here
As a result, many companies are now heading in different countries due to declining income people prefer email as the media conveys the message.
